yeah, this is a whole thing. many years ago a lot of companies discontinued selling self-belaying devices (the silent partner being the most relevant) because they're isn't a huge market for them, and people have just started using what's available for solo lead climbing
the Grigri isn't really suitable but it's also the only semi-auto-blocking device on the market. so it goes
