i used it for like a year. it was a social media platform seemingly run as a demo case of the company's OpenID tech
Oh my god yes. I was not a hardcore Jyte hound like some folks on the site, but I was definitely a regular. OpenID was such a cool thing that was surely going to start ruling the world if it enabled such a cool little place like Jyte, I thought, especially with its neat public REST APIs.
And then it got kind of big. Not Reddit or Slashdot big, but there was definitely an Eternal September moment.
And then OpenID turned out to be riddled with security flaws as a protocol and everyone abandoned it, OAuth happened, and last I heard there was an "OpenID Connect" that kinda tried to be OpenID but it only works with allowlisted identity providers but mostly people ignore it because OAuth 2 already gives you like 80% of that.
gods i never would have used this, i think i would have maybe spent a total of five minutes thinking about this, at most, but yeah i'm almost 100% certain i have seen this image before
