current Twitter (fanfiction subsection) status appears to be "someone who develops an AO3 reader android app started charging $1/month (to read more than 1 hour per day) and 1,000,000 fanfiction people are approaching their home with pitchforks for Making Profit"
like, hundreds of people completely not grasping that they're not charging for the fanfiction, which can be read on the website just fine, but for the app itself. infuriated and demanding volunteer labor
ive seen posts trying to drum up anger because "they're profiting off of YOUR works!" which, given that this is about fanfiction, is a rabbit hole that goes so deep it exhausts me to think about it
i can hold the opinions simultaneously that fanfic should be free and free to engage with and people's hard work should be rewarded in a medium that allows them life, IE cash
while also arguing more broadly "hey guys this entire thing is built on goodwill from assuming we can never profit off of this unless we nameswap to a book" and that introducing pay incentives here only welcomes corporations to argue they deserve a cut and insert themselves.
didn't this shit happen with paid mods again recently too?
people don't seem to be pitchforking this other app i see that apparently runs ads. then there's the super sketch one that is only available as an APK to sideload...... yeesh
