talking to friends on Mastodon makes me appreciate some of the stuff it does right. the per-post nature and granularity of the post visibility/privacy options are wonderful.

the fact that it's split "approve followers" and "posts are only visible to followers/tagged users" apart from the monolithic "private account" concept is incredibly useful. being able to have a public main and a secondary AD/private account, with the option to make selected posts from that account public and sharable, feels ideal to me, in terms of practicality and being able to manage my online presence in the way I want to manage it.

like, private AD and if I write something I want shared, I can choose to let everyone see it while keeping the rest of my account locked... the dream

I should post there more, I keep losing track of people when their servers defederate from dot social for whatever reason but overall "basically works & has been around since 2017" is hard to argue with.

i used to host a personal akkoma instance but it's way too much work for me, and my current instance sucks so i haven't been on fedi in months. i wish i had a good instance that made me want to use fedi tbh

Yeah the privacy options are a really incredible feature. I struggle a bit with other platforms like Bluesky because things like this make the app experience of Mastodon more enjoyable, even if the more basic stuff (finding people, cross instance interaction) is so full of sand.
