I'll point out that in the wake of the death of Google Reader, most of the FOSS alternatives that rose to "fill the gap" were self-hosted web applications with apparently no authentication model, so forking off one of those could work out in your favor
This is veering dangerously towards 'computer touching' but Tailscale elides many of those auth problems.
I think the idea with these was generally "it runs on the computer I'm going to read it on" since it was replacing an app that had per-user content
