cohost's getting harder to use as the volume of posts gets higher; I'm still enjoying it, but it affects some folks a lot more than others. a friend's left the site because the logo generator meme combined with nobody tagging their posts, muffled tags still populating the timeline, and lack of post deduplication made it impossible for them to use. i've enjoyed the logo generator stuff but i am frustrated by this

i imagine this impacts folks with severe ADHD more than others, at this point; I'd imagine folks using screen readers have a hard time getting anything out of the timeline when there's a popular post that's shared many times through the network, too.

relatedly: it's fucked that chrome doesn't allow userscripts and extensions on mobile

edit: they're working on it. it is important to remember it's a Small Team

in reply to @atomicthumbs's post:

I did mentally compare it to an artist I unfollowed because they made a twenty-post thread of their own art, and how much nagging I got when I complained about "use a userscript" and "set the automatic thread folding to be on" etc etc. I vehemently agree that deduplication is a needed feature!

I think i know what thread you mean. And yeah, it was a chore scrolling through this, especially on mobile (which i used only because i had no access to my pc for a few days, so obviously i have zero userscripts installed there).

a more aggressive autocollapse option would help loads, especially for already seen, unchanged ones. maybe even have a bottom collapse feature so that if it HAS changed but also showed up on your feed before that it only shows the most recent entry

twitter had a lot of bad ideas for a real time social networking site, but I think something it did that would work for something like cohost specifically was how it made it so threads would collapse

following people is a nightmare to me here. it's cool so see the feed grow but it also means that the first five pages of my home feed is the same post being rebugged by different people

if posts with muffled tags are still showing that's a serious bug, please have your friend report it.

in terms of share duplication: we finally have UX time available now that we have dedicated support, which means that we're gonna actually do it soon. the blocker here was always around UX for collapsing, not any sort of technical limitation (it's technically Very Easy).

also working on notification feed filtering and etc etc. we know we've got a lot of UX issues that mostly come from scale and growth and we're working on them. would be easier if i could stop being fucking sick and exhausted all the time but hey that's what happens when you've got a small team i guess

showing as in "it asks you if you want to see them;" i'm not certain but I think she was using muffling to further manage triggering stuff where CWs weren't cutting it

glad y'all are workin' on it, and folks certainly do appreciate it. i know i am having a good time on here, and absolutely getting more enjoyment per hour (eph) than i am from twitter, along with a far higher ratio of good brain to nasty brain (GB > NB)

gotcha. muffling is very specifically designed that way and not gonna change. we're working on an additional tag filtering type (silencing) which will fully hide without showing the prompt. sorry we didn't get them out at the same time.

I generally find tagging to be a decent mechanism for discoverability, especially on here where it feels de-stigmatized compared to Twitter. Unfortunately the opt-in nature of tagging depends on how courteous/considerate a poster is, and that’s not something you can really force by design.

I’m fine with folks having fun with the meme du jour, but not being able to filter due to a lack of tags does sour things. Bear in mind, this is a social matter, not a technical one.

generally I use the autocomplete to help, but you touch on a few topics so I'd add some ones like "vent", "vent post", "accessibility"... it's funny how an hour ago you put zero tags on a post complaining about the lack of tagging though

(not trying to call you out or anything, but it's just kinda weird)

i don't think people are interested in hiding posts about accessibility either

What? is this what you think tags are for, hiding posts? tags are how people find posts. When you first sign up for the site, and you're not following anyone, tags are the only way to find posts. they're useful for more than just filtering things out... which is actually what content warnings are for, come to think of it.

no offense as I don't care that much, but this just seems kind of hypocritical when you complain about the lack of tagging.

(also, it is too a vent post. you are venting about how someone needed to leave the site, how people with screen readers probably have a hard time, how nobody tags their posts including you, how chrome on mobile doesn't allow extensions and userscripts. it seriously looks like a vent post)

I don't want my posts to be accessible via the "vent post" tag, and I am not about to put a content warning on any post that involves me being frustrated by something. There are a variety of reasons I don't use Mastodon and that element of the Fediverse culture is a huge one.

I wouldn't even call this a "vent post." I don't post vent posts on my public accounts.

muffled tags are a setting you can set on your settings page. if a post has a muffled tag, then the post will be automatically collapsed by default (which you can click to open--a bit like how NSFW posts are collapsed by default). the feature is intended to hide posts you don't want to see (ex: if a bunch of people keep posting about #sports and you don't want to see sports posts, it can be useful for that)

the logo generator is in reference to this post, where jae (one of the site admins) made a site that lets you make your own cohost logo. people have been using the site to post funny and goofy logos, such as making the cohost logo say "fortnite" or something equally silly. some people are frustrated since the high volume of meme logos can drown out the rest of the posts on your timeline, and it can be hard to hide those posts if no one tags them as something like "meme" or "cohost logo"
