pdx queer dev, now an Old

i'm praising a few updates and bitching about a lot more under the cut. doing this i realize just how many things i've stopped using because they've become useless or been ruthlessly murdered. welp.

updates i actively like:

  • cohost ui toggle, that's pretty neat
  • firefox view is pretty cool
  • ffxiv relic tracker's new version is fantastic
  • read only markers on things in vscode was pretty neat
  • basically every mod maker for FFXIV is doing amazing shit, cannot stress enough, holy shit
  • the weird thing my partner's apartment complex uses for gate entry, it actually works reliably now
  • pano scrobbler behaves with no last.fm link now! good job, love this
  • mychart actually made it possible to access everything quickly, good on them
  • hugo added some really nice stuff in recent builds for options on what to do
  • literally everything Wube is doing to Factorio for 2.0, i'm just going to preemptively put this here

updates i'm still really happy about:

  • firefox containers + multi account containers are still the best thing i've ever seen for my daily use

updates i really don't give a shit about:

  • this most recent discourse one layout-wise on discord, it's whatever
  • whatever the hell steam just did with everything, it's fine, i guess
  • Teams Modern. it's at least faster, but there's a lingering bug that contractors always show up as "Unknown User" so that sucks
  • signal adding a dms vs calls button. this makes no sense to me but at least it's hideable
  • most of what 1password has been doing, electron's a bummer but they also haven't deleted the standalone keyboard so things that don't work with autofill on android can still be passworded, so, here's a sticker i guess
  • mediamonkey 5 / android 2. they're fine. i'm not switching because they both break years and years of muscle memory and perform worse, even if "worse" is still better than basically all of their competition
  • xbox ui. this is going here because most of it is better but the fullscreen ad shit if you turn it on the day of a marketing push is so fucking annoying

updates i'm freshly mad about but they're still pretty recent:

  • slack removing all hints of whatever the fuck you're looking at in 95% of themes, it's worse on mobile, tolerable on desktop, also whatever they did makes every dm window register as an acceptable autocomplete field in android :|
  • microsoft shoving ai nonsense everywhere (swiftkey, paint, teams, windows, github's notifications, etc)
  • patreon completely making the recent feed useless by only showing updates in 3s from the same creator
  • discord "super reaction" nonsense giving you scary NO REFUNDS popups if you accidentally click one ever
  • thunderbird's new deal. i don't even know where to start
  • manifest v3 isn't even out yet and google can preemptively go fuck themselves
  • confluence removing markdown editing, come on

updates i'm still mad about:

  • google putting the clock where notifications go in android, unclearable notifications are just Not Something that works for my brain
  • literally everything about gpm -> youtube music
  • gmail getting rid of colors everywhere.
  • google drive sync requiring drive mapping + breaking multi-account use
  • chromecast's "new" ui. you can no longer pause a video to view anything on the lower half of the screen without going into the remote and doing multiple clicks to remove the half-screen bar telling you to go fuck yourself, idiot
  • actually, while we're on the subject of chromecast, whoever the fuck decided that they should now only update and reset while you're watching videos. come the fuck on.
  • bitbucket removing the ability to view PRs by commit, they kinda added this back with being able to jump to the commit but you can't ... really look at it correctly this way?
  • bitbucket removing the ability to tell what files you've reviewed (they Kinda added this back finally but it's not as good)
  • bitbucket moving reviewers to the sidebar, instead of as a main part of the review, buried next to the Build list even if you aren't using their CI
  • bitbucket changing "remove approval to merge PR if PR is updated" to be a paid feature. we're obviously paying for it but this is still fucking bonkers, because it's no longer default, so people can just sneak in the most batshit things if you didn't remember to set this. per repository.
  • bitbucket changing it to require that you go into the repository to create a PR for it. this wastes so, so much of my time
  • windows 11 moving the volume osd to cover subtitles. what the fuck was this about
  • windows 11 task manager, literally everything about it. it's slower, requires more screen space to see tab names, regularly hangs
  • windows 11 snipping tool. it doesn't work with different density monitors, this bug didn't exist in older versions, and if you put the 10 one on 11 it doesn't happen.
  • really, there's a Lot of windows 11 shit
  • facebook killing "recent" after spending 8 years burying it more and more
  • new wiki theme is entirely mobile centric and makes it very difficult to tell what's up on larger monitors with headings
  • ragnarok online morroc is ... "ah sorry new players, one of the starting cities is now a Nightmare Zone"
  • b612. i do not need to elaborate
  • all of google's icons now being a blob
  • except the emoji

in reply to @aune's post:

you may notice that most of my biggest complaints are in things one might classify as productivity software

i left out even more specific ones about adp (time off? fuck you, don't need to find that, shouldn't be taking it!), jira, snyk (its updates are probably fine, but we changed to it and it is Dogshit vs what we were using), and the list goes on and fucking on
