artist alley is so crazy im logging on to cohost and earnestly saying "boy i wonder what new advertisements will be shown to me today!"

the thing for me is like I've never before been in a situation where the ads were for things I was interested in and my clickthru rate on these is like 10,000% higher than on normal ads because most normal ads are like for gambling mobile games or the concept of a brand or something else that just makes me instantaneously want to get the fuck away from it

Which is to say:

  • I do not mind ads when they are both relevant and not actively being forced on me, and in fact seek them out because they are relevant

tbh this is basically how the classified ads in newspapers used to work

all that is old is new again

I can't help but remember, way back in the day, Spiceworks whole business model was that they had relevant information on your network (as a network management tool), knew what your suppliers were, and gave you entirely relevant ads

Almost out of toner on network printer? bam, here's an affiliate link for it
Disks full on some of your servers? Here's server ads from your usual choice

seems they're just generic slop now but i always thought the idea was pretty neat

I really hope there ends up being a way to get these served in, like, the sidebar or regular feed, even an opt-in one, because once the novelty wears off I really don't see myself continuing to consciously make the effort to check the ads

in reply to @MOOMANiBE's post:

This is the magic of community ads instead of megacorp ads. I've found my favorite webcomics through that model.

Artists asking for commissions are also advertising, the good version has been here all along but it's usually just not supported in this way. The rare time an artist can work with a platform, rather than fighting it tooth and nail.
