Microsoft has made good on its promise, or threat, to put advertisements inside the Windows 11 Start menu with its latest update.

The 2024-04 Cumulative Update Preview, aka KB5036980, is now being rolled out to all Windows 11 users, and with it comes Start menu ads. As it's only a "preview" at the moment, users can choose whether or not to install it, though once it becomes a bona fide update, Microsoft will force it onto PCs eventually.

The headline in the linked article, not repeated here, is a reference to a previous, very cringe, comment made by a microsoft exec. The ads are presumably unrelated. Or very related depending on how you look at it.

Writing has been on the wall for a decade. Many would argue it's been malware for longer still.

But there's a specific kind of person that gets very Uppity when you mention that they do actually have choices, who has not actually tried any of these choices. I find those people very frustrating.

Oh totally, even in the Vista era they were "experimenting" with methods of grabbing adrev or repeat purchases off of normal Windows usage, but seeing a bunch of them all just become core system components of Windows at a time when their desktop dominance means... Very little thanks to the majority of "real work" being less tethered to desktop computing now, is a desperation move I wasn't expecting to see pan out exactly the way it has.

I'm also doing my bit on The Other Websites by spreading news like this with a link to the Linux Mint site in the replies because I do think things are shifting, slowly, and the "I would never try Linux" people are becoming more receptive to the idea of Trying Linux.

whenever software stops supporting EOL versions of windows i always see people get mad about it because they can't afford a new PC even though it's a security concern. a lot of these people will get hostile if you bring up linux because they think linux is nerd shit (despite all the effort made to change that image) but in truth, it's the only way you can use a PC without planned obsolescence sending it to an early grave. Wish you could help 'em but hopefully they come around some day.
