textures should not be larger than 1024x1024

no real world use found for 24GB of vram

they are playing us for fools

the industry's currently Fucked.

look, so, we've been through this before. it's worked out in the past, sorta. kinda.

every increase in screen resolution has, more or less, been a 4x increase in rendering power needed. just to put more or less the same thing on screen.

moore's law and improvements in storage technology were giving us a real, real nice boost there.

... until they weren't. we're KINDA trying to claw it back with all of these "adaptive renderings" that actually just render at 480p then upscale to 4K for shenanigans, but.

hardware is just not actually fast enough for 4K. it wasn't 4 years ago. it is, Maybe, on the cusp of it now at the upper end. you will spend actual kilowatts, to say nothing of the heat and size required. we can Do the storage space, but, also not in NVMe.

i'm not saying everything needs to be the "worse looking games made by people being paid better" thing. i'm not (entirely) saying we should be going back to psx quality of rendering.

but we're at this really weird point where the attempts to wow people further with visuals are resulting in remasters of games that take up 5x the space for ... slightly higher resolution textures. for what.

I think more games need villains who are openly, unapologetically villainous. Subtly has its place, sure, but I think that it's often used too much.

Even if a game's writing isn't great, having an antagonist from early on who makes me say "wow, fuck them" and look forward to kicking their ass will still keep me fairly engaged.

It's the Killmonger Problem.

Most studios, similar to Marvel, have no idea how to write an ambiguous villain that isn't someone who makes entirely too good of points, so the main way they're shown to be evil turns out to be a few to a thousand random murders that are completely out of character.
