  • first off, Octo Expansion very strongly pulls on vaporwave for a lot of its imagery and visual design, so the marble statue posed like that is clearly the bust of Helios as used as the cover for Floral Shoppe
  • as a statue in the middle of Inkopolis Bay with an (incomplete) arm reaching up, it's pretty clearly also the Statue of Liberty
    • considering this Statue of Liberty (the symbol of America) has a giant laser cannon pointed at Tokyo meant to destroy it, we can also take it as yet another example of this being Japanese media about how nukes are bad
    • it also means it kinda takes on Planet of the Apes symbolism of the Statue of Liberty being a final statement of this taking place on Earth, though that one's probably less intentional and i only bring it up because i can pretend it's a homestuck reference
  • in addition to the vaporwave symbolism, it is also an explicit fascist wearing a marble statue as an avatar of the past. yes, Commander Tartar is a marble statue avatar fascist.
    • as in real life where most real marble statues were almost certainly painted and colorful, only bleached white by the passage of time, Tartar is also acting in a malformed, idolized image of a perfect past it wants to return to, despite the fact that when it's on its supervillain rant about the flaws of inkfish society, it's clearly describing humans too without knowing it
      • ...which makes the fact that you beat the NILS Statue by covering it in paint and making it colorful that much more satisfying
    • in fact, the fact that you win against the NILS Statue by doing what is literally equivalent to a Turf War, the most clear symbolism of the petty fashion and "decadent" fun inklings are obsessed with being the same way the fascist is overcome: by diverse, chaotic color.

"the chaos of an imperfect but colorful world is worth fighting for over a homogenous genocided monochrome slurry" has been a repeated major theme for three Splatoon story campaigns in a row now, but it's never executed better than destroying the marble statue fascist by covering it in the brightly colored chaotic paint it hates so much.

Splatoon is so fucking good, y'all
