@mutton-bandit asked:

Came out the cinema, after seeing Asteroid City, thinking "Now I should go read that long post Michael Lutz made about it on co-host." I'm not sure it actually exists though. Anyway, you see this movie?

i did see this movie (on the day it opened, which happened to be my birthday) and then meant to write a post about it and forgot (because i ended up having to get ready for a big trip i'm on for the next couple weeks) but this ask is a good enough time to write some of the thoughts i had about it. (if you're a person who cares about spoilers, note that i am going to talk about the film in full.)

'theater' has been in anderson's movies since rushmore, but the last couple have REALLY felt like explorations of theatrical production. so reading this is just like candy, to me.

(and i think at the end of it all, as a former journo and critic, french dispatch has become my fave)

i'm glad you liked it kelsey (both my post and the movie)! i am also looking forward to rewatching it so i can tether some of my ideas here back to specific things i'm not just half-remembering

Fantastic piece. Especially loved your point about how the conventionality of the portrayal of the kids highlights that beautiful thematic thread of having hope that the kids won't fail like their parents have. "Am I playing it right?" turned me into a blubbery mess as someone recently having turned thirty and constantly dealing with mounting loss. Brought my dad to see it and it was a great idea for a hang and a terrible idea for our emotional states
