Last night, Spotify told me that one of my most listened to artists ever is a band called Pipes You See, Pipes You Don't. I do not know this band or any of these songs. But it is exactly the sort of band I would be deeply obnoxious about about back in the early 2000s when this album came out. So, I don't know, did I listen this in a fugue state (enough that it would be in my 'favorite artists' category?) or is Spotify haunted?

so the thing that happened is that this band used to have a DIFFERENT album on Spotify, and that's gone now but they seem to have rotated a different one on. And, becuase of the incredibly memorable title of that other album, I think I only ever remembered that and not the band's actual name.

there have been a lot of reports through the years of this kind of thing, i don't think there's ever been proper article / investigation / exposé that went public though. the last time it cropped up in a major way was people's 2021 Wrapped being inaccurate / having songs they'd never heard of. the general cocktail of answers seems to be: 1) hacked account, 2) artist scamming for listens, 3) bugs in spotify's algorithms, or some combination of all of the above.
