As someone who's only really watched Star Wars: Rebels on Blu-Ray and not streaming I didn't realise just how much they changed the Disney+ versions when it came to dimming the lightsaber fights, until it was brought up again in the most recent episode of AMCA.
I took a couple of random screengrabs from the Blu-Ray (left) and Disney+ (right) and there's a real difference in some shots, it's crazy that this is the main way people will watch this show now.
yeah Disney+ got a lot of accessibility attention so i wouldn't be surprised if this was the case. it's pretty common in animation.
I'm pretty sure that's the case, and that makes total sense, it's just a shame that there's no way to watch the original versions without going to physical media.
When I got my blu-rays I was pretty shocked at the difference in quality, even outside of these scenes; turns out Disney Plus looks even worse if you're watching it on a PC.
I noticed the Crunchyroll version of Bravern was this way as well. Of course I accept the point that it's a safeguard for photosensitivity, but it was distracting at best during scenes that were meant to be as flashy as possible. Like someone put a transparent grey lens cap over film and just washed out all the contrast for a few moments.
Back in the day when these were coming out I didn't have cable so I bought the episodes on apple.
They also had darkening during these scenes and I never knew why until Austin said something on AMCA
I don't know if it was more/less dim then what D+ does
