Since our apartment doesn’t have room for a Full Retro Setup, I recently hooked up an old PC to my wife and my television and began dumping emulators and ROMs onto it.
I played Fatal Frame II when I was younger and loved it (to this day it is one of my favorite games of all time), but I had never dived into the rest of the series.
While in surgery recovery I played through the newer remakes of Mask of the Lunar Eclipse and Maiden of the Black Water. I enjoyed both from start to finish and decided to boot up the PC and play 1-3.
I can’t think of another series that deserves more than Fatal Frame. The ambiance of the first blows a lot of current horror games completely out of the water.
Playing through Fatal Frame 1 really has me missing a period of time when mainstream releases were allowed to be slower paced.
We still have slow games in the indie-sphere and I’m incredibly grateful for that, but I wish some of those older design practices could reemerge in the AAA world.
