Mastodon is… strange. I made an account on one of the game dev instances as a promotional tool.

So far it feels like a sanitized version of Twitter. It’s reminiscent of LinkedIn in a way, kind of frigid.

The invisible guiding hand there seems to be this vague idea of ”networking”. Maybe I’m on the wrong side of it, but every post i’ve seen has been a clinically worded promotional tweet.

I’ve seen a ton of posts about how kind Mastodon is, how it’s aura is welcoming. To be honest I don’t get that feeling from it. I’d best describe the air there as stale

Personhood is stripped and what it left is the Personal Brand™️.

The Social Media equivalent of Uncanny Valley.

The other time I joined Mastodon a few years ago, there happened to be a group of K-POP fans roleplaying as K-POP stars or something like that? I didn't totally understand it, but those were the only posts I was seeing that whole time.

I have nothing to add, cohost seems like a cooler place than mastodon for all the reasons you've said, but I'm not sure cohost will ever have enough people on it to replace twitter... and maybe that's a good thing. Maybe this will be a nice decently sized thing.

I've had a similar experience, but for the instance I'm on it feels like I have to post something "worthy" and I can't just freely shitpost or nonsensepost like I'm used to. I don't know how I feel about it yet. Sometimes I think some separation between personhood and personal brand could be a good thing.
