Additional Vocals, Guitars, Synth, & Mastering by Austin Miller (@austinmwav)
tbh ive been so nervous about releasing this, i haven't made non-games music in a really long time
i put a lot of time into mixing and recording on this, a lot was super spontaneous (the french horn was recorded 2 days ago after not playing the instrument in ages)
the washtub bass was one of the first things i recorded, like 2 weeks ago. i experimented with going from plucked notes to bowed on the chorus and ill probably post a clip of that solo'd later because its such a fun sound. there is a little singing saw on the chorus because i just decided to embrace being a little Extra on this. one of the percussion layers is just me brushing my fingers and tapping my banjo near the edge of the head. i recorded trumpet around that time, too, but cut it pretty quickly.
this is the first thing @austinmwav and i have made as a team! we worked by sending stems back and forth, and we really liked using Samply to handle that aspect. i only just heard about it and the free account has surprisingly good features (this is not an ad lol)
not everything we do (original stuff) will be this full — actually i want to work on something minimalist next — but i think we're already figuring out the vibe of our work, which us neat. for the cover i wanted to lean into the vibe of the song and do this big, lush thing that hopefully brings something new to it. i really only cover things i really connect to — and shankill was actually one of the first songs i ever played in a public setting back when i was in college.
this is 90% real instruments we played and recorded ourselves, and im really enjoying giving myself an excuse to play with physical sounds and experiment (like making that 1970s radioshack telephone microphone! i used it on some of the layers in this cover!)
anyway, idk, feel free to leave an ask if you have any questions? we are in our music nerd era (perpetual)
