I wrote a lot of words before I could write my The Boy and the Heron review, and I liked some of them enough to use for this experiment/project/"video essay." So this isn't like, how I feel today about these things today (see the review for that). It's me working through my feelings on class in Miyazaki's filmography. I even misremember some details of The Wind Rises, but that's just part of the discursive journey here. Anyways, there are very cursory plot details in here as well as some trailer footage. Shoutouts to Yussef for the Wind Rises footage!

its an interesting thing to be looking at media that is a reflection of culture and childhood which is itself somewhat affected by its creator having had an influence on those very things. you either start being self-referential or tell more specific stories

i like how you phrase that! TBATH kinda crystallizes for me the direction of his filmography iterating on (or refining) this single story. It's at its most archetypal here, though, and so I think you begin to see references to all sorts of Ghibli movies as the imagery and themes he's been working with are all laid bare. There's gonna be so many easter egg videos tho.
