seeing a bunch of journalism websites post GOTY articles that are basically all a list of the exact same games is increasingly driving me to the conclusion that GOTY is a useless and boring concept that mostly reaffirms whatever's already sold well, and I really wish we could refocus that energy into literally anything else, maybe something that would be interesting to read or would feature games that aren't already the most heavily-covered games on the internet

yeah "game of the year" is very specifically the thing i least want to hear about because i have surely already heard of it. but i guess the audience for that is the awful lot of people who want to feel like their favorite game "won" in some sense beyond selling a quadrillion copies

I've been running a little survey of Cohost's favorite games of 2023 and it is what you'd expect with the exception that some folks have put some really wild games I've never heard of. Once the survey is done (leaving it open until next month) I'll make a write up and try to highlight the stuff that is interesting.
