Nobody talks about how much of programming "skill" is just mental endurance. Lots of stuff isn't that hard but requires you to be able to hold more state in your head than is comfortable and iterate on it there for longer than is comfortable.

The idea that I often use (and it seems to apply to all jobs) is that the "skill" is whether you can appreciate pushing through the times that you need that endurance. If it's fun, or at least tolerable, then you can be a "good programmer."
