I had occasionally checked out the itch pages of the various rounds of Mini Jam (a 3 day game jam with a theme and a restriction to follow) intending to participate eventually and then one evening I came home from hanging out with a friend, realised the current round of the jam had started and actually managed to brainstorm an idea. The theme of the jam was "ink" and the restriction was "The player must control multiple entities", so I came up with the idea of playing as two blobs who work together to grow the biggest sunflower.
I had played around with GB Studio back in 2020 and had a lot of fun with it, so I kept meaning to go back. Working with a relatively unfamiliar engine for a game jam is generally a bad idea, but luckily I managed to do everything I wanted to :D I used a free spritesheet and music to save time on the background art. I did draw and animate the two blob characters as well as the titular sunflower and the tulips. I'm pretty happy with the blobs considering that I have relatively little experience with animating and pixel art.
I'd only made visual novels before this so it was definitely an interesting experience to try laying out a relatively open game and seeing how people interact with it. The gameplay is relatively simple and just involves finding things to help your sunflower grow, but I hope it still makes for a cute little experience of helping two blobs make their dream come true.
