a TTRPG system I've been designing (and designing several games in) has, since its inception, had a system where by default you roll 2 dice, and when you go to roll you can instead roll 2 dice, check it against a different number that is not the difficulty of the thing you're doing, and then depending on how you did you either roll 2 dice again or roll 3 dice and either have advantage or disadvantage. this is a dumb and complicated system that no one has ever wanted to use in playtesting, and it's been sitting in the back of my mind for close to a year as a thing I really, really need to fix, and... I think I just figured it out. I think I know how to make it so you always only ever roll 2 dice and you do the same thing every time and you don't have to consult a flowchart to decide whether it's a good idea to use one of the core game mechanics
