we watched Crash (the 1996 Cronenberg movie) tonight, and honestly, we need more movies that are designed to be off-putting. no one is willing to make a weird psychosexual nightmare these days because everything has to be a big four quadrant tentpole with mainstream appeal. give me a movie that's actively hostile not just to its audience but also to the rest of film as a medium.

I have a lot of other thoughts about the movie that maybe I'll get into later, but for now I'm just focused on the fact that I cannot imagine this movie being made today even though everything it has to say about the relationship between sex, violence, and cameras has grown infinitely more relevant than it ever has been
