Google isn’t treated as an advertiser or even particularly interested in audiences as such; it is instead a machine for conducting an invasive mode of surveillance and dispossessing users of “their” data, conceived as their rightful property rather than something that techno-social conditions structure and produce. Users’ data and behavior become products that are taken from them, but users themselves are not seen as commoditized.
