marigold's five star... i mean dream star press conference was incredibly dry. every wrestler's comments, with only two real exceptions for contrast, fit completely into one of two themes. they were essentially either losers or winners: complaining that they hadn't built momentum and that the people they wanted to wrestle weren't interested in them as a result, or calling out the rest of the participants for being weak or unmotivated and declaring they're not worth wrestling. on the other hand, mirai took on an enthusiastic tone towards meeting different styles of wrestlers, while chiaki made fun of the tense atmosphere and refused the framing by the interviewer (obviously scripted by the company) that that made her less admirable and engaged than the other wrestlers. nozaki had no comment, which while notable fails to endear her to me in any way. there are several clear rivalries or one-sided chases set up by the press conference, most interesting to me being utami towards natsumi showzuki, but were there any real reasons given for their interest beyond strength and achievements? sadly no. it reeks of rossy resuming his booking of early stardom, though of course i can't know that for certain. when his companies have done well, wrestlers have been confirmed to be at the forefront.

sona was disappointed in my views on this and i guess i am too. in-ring they are doing something different from other companies, ironically rejecting giulia's patternless bomb spamming in favor of spending most of the match trying to gain control on the mat. sona always points out how ten minutes have passed and no one has tried to lift anyone. that really can't be said of any promotion, male, female, or intergender, that i have watched in modern wrestling. i want to value this promotion for being an alternative and a place where mirai especially can express the style she wants without being held back by what a bushiroad executive thinks makes for good tv. stardom's sticking to a njpw main event formula has been very disappointing to me, and if it weren't doing so well right now in all its matches besides those big ppv main events, i would be much less likely to be watching it. but marigold, this isn't it. not yet, anyway. i am a wrestling fan that first and foremost wants to be startled into obsession with drama, whether that's a simple singular moment or a years long epic. i want to feel those dramatic emotions like i'm watching a stage play. mirai can still do that without any particular booking given to her at all, but the actwres girls don't seem like they can.
