okay so
ive recently decided to attempt to catch all 289 Big Fish currently in Final Fantasy 14 and i kinda feel compelled to keep note of it so??? hi thats this. if you don't know Big Fish ive put an explanation under the break
ive caught 131 out of 289 fish so far!! ive been going for three weeks, or just about, so that's pretty good progress. the true test of patience is yet to come
Been not fishing as much as I'd like this week because there's an event on right now that I like to participate in, plus some irl stuff, so I got less fishing time in than I'd like.
I did manage to catch Lancetfish with an extremely clutch Intuition pull!! It's one of the harder fish to get, so getting so very lucky feels great.
Lancetfish is one of those weird Big Fish that is just so hard to get. Every expansion the devs release a number of Big Fish that are extremely hard to catch, called legendary fish.
This one was part of Shadowbringers patch 5.55.
Lancetfish requires you to catch another Big Fish - Mora Tecta - beforehand. Twice. In a 5 minute window just before it's own. It's a frantic kind casting trying to maximise your chances for two of them and it gets worse when you catch one and then are just missing the other and you can see the window closing.
You can also arrive even earlier and catch one Mora Tecta an hour or two beforehand - Mora Tecta often shows up hourly, but only 5 minutes at a time. You can then use the full 5 minute just before the Lancetfish window to catch just one additional Mora Tecta - but you're stuck in the zone for the duration in between Mora Tecta spawns. (this is called being stuck in jail, appropriately) ALSO then you REALLY have to hope that you catch one more Mora Tecta or your jailtime would've been for nothing!
I didn't want to sit around for two hours, so I had to catch two Mora Tecta to even get a chance at Lancetfish. It looked damn grim. I had one get away at the 2 minute mark. I caught my first one at the 3 minute mark. Then absolutely nothing. No more nibbles. Desperately I threw my line out at 2 seconds before the 5 minutes were up. This is good enough - The fish will still bite as long as you cast your line within the time window. But it was also a total Hail Mary because the chances of it biting isn't any higher than HOLY SHIT IT ACTUALLY WORKED????
Absolutely frantic now I had to prepare for Lancetfish while it's own 5 minute window had already started as it comes DIRECTLY after the Mora Tecta window. I had basically lost a minute already and wouldn't get as many chances as someone who didn't clutch and FIRST TRY?????? WHAT
This fish is incredibly slippery and people often, very often, have to try several windows to catch it. As in, if they even get the CHANCE to get it and I just pulled it in on my first try.
