i'm an american and i was gonna say "that's how i was always taught to pronounce it" but then i remembered
i took eight years of spanish, one year of french twice, and dabbled in german, catalan, galician, and italian
so for practical purposes, i guess i do know french
I've never heard anyone pronounce it differently than "on-wee" but I also only really hear people with at least a passing understanding of what french sounds like using it
