tldr: here's a story and a video about the coolest thing that's every happened to me.

So, as you may have seen, I recently made a website called One Million Checkboxes. It had...a million checkboxes on it. But the bit was that they were global - checking or unchecking a box changed it for everyone on the site immediately.

The site was (shockingly?) popular; hundreds of thousands of players checked over 650,000,000 boxes in the two weeks that I ran the site. It made the New York Times; there's a Wikipedia page. The whole thing was nuts.

About a week into running the site I thought I'd been hacked. And a few hours after that I was sobbing - extraordinarily proud at some brilliant teens.

I've written up the story on my blog and made my first youtube video about it!

Originally I wanted to crosspost the whole thing here, but there are enough images and gifs in the blog (and enough emotion in my voice in the video - I keep crying thinking about it!) that I can't really do that here. Sorry!

Anyway! Hope you enjoy the story :)

Really great story, thank you for sharing! As soon as I saw One Million Checkboxes (around the time you posted it, I think) I knew that probably some group of teens out there was gonna find something to do with it. My first obvious guess we making little pictures or spelling words out of the boxes, especially on a small scale, but this is even cooler.

I love how the reward for a curious person finding it on their own is to be invited into the group of people doing it, I think that's really clever and magical.

Glad you enjoyed it!

And yes, I had the same thought! It would have been cool enough for a few people to team up and do this, but the fact that the reward for finding the secret was talking to the other people who found it was so sick. And of course the fact that I ended up finding it was really special :)

Crazy to think that if I hadn't dumped my database for no reason I probably would never have seen it!

Oh my god I was so close to stumbling upon that discord link before I lost interest and stopped messing around. If I continued for literally just another 10 minutes I almost certainly would have found it. This is really cool, but man does it hurt to know I got this close to seeing it with my own eyes.
