I wanna keep doing the FFXIV MSQ into the latest patches.

But the fucking gear wall for content even a few patches back is high-key bullshit ngl.

Why do I have to rerun the previous dungeon like 15 times just to creep my total ilvl up 15 points, only to then have to do it again on the next dungeon?

I get that it's done because of the time between patches and such, but... If nothing else, it should only be the case for the current patch.

Especially sucks b/c dungeons just take so fucking long to run at this level. If I do duty support, it's easily 30-40 mins a run. If I queue, it might shave that down, but the queue timer more than makes up for that efficiency gain by taking 5-15 minutes a run, with at least one other person with which I potentially have to share gear drops, meaning I have at least +n runs to add on top. I'd Party Finder thru the next dungeon, but that doesn't remove the restrictions for me as a 99% solo player, and definitely doesn't make it faster. It honestly makes me regret going to the Oceanic datacenter. I traded extremely fast queues for low ping in a game in which I don't need low ping, b/c I don't like stranger-filled PVP.

Blegh. I just wanna know what's goin' down without having to read about it elsewhere. Wish there was a story-only mode with no gear or tome drops that I could play. At least Duty Support is solving the issue of mandatory MSQ queues for the most part.

I wish I had a brain and a life that meant I could play a couple hours of straight dungeons/raiding/whatever in one sitting, but it's too rare to be reliable. Frustrating.

in reply to @balketh's post:

You know, I went and did the math.

It's ~32hrs of straight grinding daily roulettes, 5hrs a day for 6 and a half days straight, to get enough tomestones of Astronomy together to be able to do up to patch 6.2's content. Which, to be clear, I am up to the trial of, which is the last gear-capped content before 6.3's 590 and 595 capped content pieces.

During this time, I would also have amassed the weekly cap of 450 Causality tomestones, netting me one 620lv upgrade in that time. This would be enough to get me over the 595 requirement to do the current patch trial, not including any lucky drops from run content that might be an upgrade. So we're talking about a 32hr grind to be allowed to attempt 2 trials and a dungeon, so I can find out what's currently going on in the story.

Only to have to do something like it again, but even harder and more of a grind, as I'd be closer to the current bleeding edge, when the next patch drops with an ilvl requirement of 605 or something.

It's totally achievable, sure.

But it's entirely fallacious to say that I only need to buy a couple of pieces and the entire problem goes away. Close to a full-time work week of content grinding is absolutely not a simple task, especially when, as I said in the original chost, because of the structure of my life, I can't easily commit even 30-45 minutes straight to get a dungeon run under my belt, let alone 5 hours a day's worth. And that might be how it always is when one plays this close to the cutting edge of the MSQ, but the strange dichotomy exists of my entire play experience from ARR to now never once encountering this problem. In one respect, the game's always been this way and probably always will be. On the other, it was never like this, and it sucks that it is, now, for me.

And, obviously, that's MMOs, sure, but it's also never been a GOOD thing about MMOs. FFXIV has SO MUCH content for raiders and statics and high-end players, they shouldn't lock the dang MSQ behind grinding at all. And I suppose it's fair to say they... Haven't, strictly - this is all in post-Endwalker MSQ, not necessarily main expansion MSQ, so... New perspective, I suppose.

I've edited this a few times, if only to tweak up the language as I keep coming back, rereading it, and realising I was being a bit of a defensive ass for no reason.

I guess gearing is harder if you're not doing any of the raids (?) which can get you a couple of ~free pieces that help get the number up. It is alarming to be able to spent poetics at the end of every expac to immediately get up to the patch content and then suddenly be dropped in a system where you have to run two different kinds of raids & do relic quests & roulettes to get gear

Yeah, you pretty much nailed it. It's jarring as all hell, but it also is what it is.

I basically play the game entirely solo. Unless I get a lucky day where I'm able to commit the hour+ to queuing up and completing a raid, I'm still basically SoL. Best I really do is tab-target my way through a duty-support dungeon run. I'd probably do a lot better if I got my second monitor back, but yeah.

Just shocks me that it's the MSQ, but I did kinda forget that it's really the between-expacs MSQ, which, if I just wait until the next expac, there'll be some kind of easy accessible catch-up gear.
