RIP Cohost 2024. You were the best social media site to have ever been done. Long live eggbug. If you're seeing this in the future, on some archive, be kind to others. It's the only way things get better.

Definitely just go do it. Make sure your gear is up to par, use your mitigations sensibly (and don’t forget Arm’s Length works as a mitigation vs. trash mobs), and modulate your pull size according to how confident you’re feeling in yourself and your healer. You’ll be fine, tanking isn’t that hard.

Yeah I like using Arm's Length for nonbosses when I can, b/c the slow is a shockingly good trash mitigation.

Gear is no issue; my DoH are more than twice my tank levels, so keeping up on gear won't be an issue for aaaaages.

And yeah, I've consistently heard early tanking is pretty easy b/c it's basically just DPS except you suck the dick instead of spank the ass, and make sure all the dicks are pointed at you.

I'm mostly just stressed about slowing folks down in their levelling roulette as the traditional tip of the spear, and not pulling my weight - even in consideration of the kinder community of FFXIV.

I know the feeling really well because I used to stress about it SO BADLY about a year ago when I first started leveling tanking classes. Tanxiety is real, and it sucks. But, this is one of the best MMOs to get rid of that, I feel like. The only way you can meaningfully slow things down is if you basically refuse to do your job: if you pick up two packs of monsters at a time to fight, spam your AOE for most damage and rotate your cooldowns, you are already making standard time to a clear. The rest is up to the DPS to do their damn job :P

Also as someone else mentioned here, the quick "Hello, still practicing tanking/first time tanking this dungeon" in party chat is a great way not only to set expectations for your healer/party but also as a psychological comfort thing, at least for me.

You can do it! We all believe in you

Strongly appreciated! I get a similar kind of apprehension in PVP games, especially shooters like Tarkov (though that's in part gear-fear), whenever there's basically a chance of the entire endeavour being wasted time - especially when other people are involved, whose time I may also be wasting.

I've got me a macro for a plea for patience set up, etc; I've even gone to the effort of upgrading every piece of gear I could to ensure I'm not lacking in any area. Stiiiiiiill makes it tough.

I think part of it is the idea that, in most cases, folks rely on the tank to set the pace (and then the tank and healer become codependent re: who can handle more/less).

The other part is that, as a Floor Tank main, my instincts are honed to somehow find the vuln stacks or the death-fall edge of the arena. Granted, as a real tank, the goal is to move as little as needed, but still. My clumsiness is still a concern!

I cherish your collective belief, and will think of it when I'm staring down that button again.

Once plugins come back. B/c fuck first-time-tanking without my usual crutches! ^_^;
