Right now? Everything feels like it just doesn't really give a shit about you as a player. Your experience, as the Player, is not important for the experience of Starfield existing in the world, which is... very strange. Its self-importance feels like it's legitimately gotten in the way of a more enjoyable game. If it wasn't for the the fact that this is a Creation Engine (2) game, I'd write it off as unlikely-to-be-salvaged mid garbage on top of what could be an interesting game. Extended thoughts under the cut.
TL;DR It's truly not respectful of your time and effort as a player, in the weirdest and most stuck-up-its-own-ass ways, while desperately trying and failing to hide its shortcomings, and will truly only be worth playing with a couple of really strong performance optimization mods and a complete UX overhaul, and that's just to bring it up to worth-playing, not necessarily 'great game'.
From overall performance being hot garbage (30FPS, with menus THAT laggy and slow? Get fucked, Todd Bethesda.) To the once-again-frustratingly-console-oriented UX that doesn't even have a clear 'equipped' screen - just a fucking single dog-ear checkmark on an item - absolutely stupid, to encumbrance that can literally kill you, to being able to Fast Travel almost everywhere from everywhere to the extent that you miss out on SO MUCH SHIT, to all forms of travelling anywhere, including fast travel and manual running around, is so fucking tedious since rather than let you ACTUALLY fly your cool-ass ship they've just made everything fucking cutscenes to hide loading screens! Even the fucking gravwarp is a cutscene. At least in Elite: Dangerous you get to do that shit in some capacity. Fucking, to just be able to move closer to a landmark, you have to loading-screen onto your ship, loading screen into space, loading screen BACK onto the planet, loading screen OUT of your ship... It's fucking sad, honestly.
Even the little shit like "oh, didn't start with that skill? Oh well, you can't do it until you pour points into unlocking the privilege of using a feature literally called 'Basic Boost', y'know, the iconic jetpack movement shown in EVERY trailer?"
You literally CAN'T SNEAK WITHOUT STARTING WITH THAT SKILL. Doesn't matter anyway, since sneak is HOT GARBAGE in this game without HEAVILY investing in it.
And they make you do these asinine little 'challenges' to unlock further upgrades, which is, on the one hand, fine - means you have to actually play as the style you want to progress - but also fucking stupid when I have skill points, but have to wait while I arbitrarily run back and forth for 10 minutes to finish a challenge to unlock it for purchase.
Because, yeah, the first 5 levels of this game's entire progress system are almost UNIVERSALLY spent on unlocking the inventory carry capacity increases. Because, again, you can die from being overencumbered, and suffocating in CO2.
And a WHOLE weapon/armour modding system, like, 'suppressors', 'reflex sights', and shit... and these aren't... Items? Why can't I take these off the fucking guns? Even just at the weapons station? Why the fuck do I have to craft a NEW suppressor for the SAME gun? What the hell kind of awful logic is that? I should be able to gather up a bunch of shit guns with the mods I want, piece them off, and put together my own hybrid beast. Someone will definitely fix this.
But holy shit, even a fucking RECYCLE option would be nice??
And now more containers aren't containers, but actual objects that open that you have to look in and search, and TOO many items are useless garbage, while useful resource items aren't clearly marked enough to make it easy to find them, so MUCH of the early game is thumbing through actually useless trash that is highlighted in the fucking scanner for some reason... Ughhh...
Two steps forward, one step back which causes their pants to fall down and sweetroll cream to drip all down their shirt making them look like a jizz-covered embarrasment. Seriously.
It'll be a lot of fun once it's actually a good game.
