RIP Cohost 2024. You were the best social media site to have ever been done. Long live eggbug. If you're seeing this in the future, on some archive, be kind to others. It's the only way things get better.

Only in the last year or so have I begun doing some of my own vehicle maintenance and I am definitely not willing to get underneath. I’ll jack it up to take a wheel off but I’m staying safely beside, thankyouverymuch.

I feel you. I do most car stuff as cheap as possible but one thing I DID pay up for was a quality jack, jackstands and wheel chocks. I ponied up the dollars for those because I figured if I ever DO have to go under, I wanted every safeguard I could get.

The recommended method is stands, leaving the jack extended and engaged as well, and putting at least one tire under the car if you've got one near/are taking one off - but even that's not a guarantee.

I'm personally too big to slide under a car, especially with a rolling base propping me up further. I prefer wheel ramps, because they keep the wheels engaged with supporting the vehicle, but it's not suitable for all possibilities of maintenance.

I like the idea of car lifts, but it's yet another potential 'cascade failure = instant death' situation. I like the idea more of car pits, where you just park the car on a ground-level base, and walk/climb down into a space that is too narrow for the car to get to you in any meaningful way. There's still issues there, especially depending on design, and again there's no wheel access, but it does prevent you from needing to be unsafely beneath a car.
