This one uses a realistic and grounded world to exemplify the horror and hubris of how absurdly powerful fireball-style magic is, and that's literally half the fun of it. :D
It's modern fantasy though. :<
my hot take is kind of adjacent to that: magic that has fully developed systems with defined principles and rules isn't actually magic. that's just a different world's physics
