A Wizard (Necromancer) who finished medical school without tracking to become a Cleric, their staunch disapproval of the Gods preventing them from ever bending the knee, and never being spiritually open enough to accept the Druidic paths.

They become a Necromancer out of their failure to use arcane magic to heal or raise others, living with a deep disappointment for themselves and their creations, as they hold no misgivings about what they've made or done, rather than the trite disillusion or wilful ignorance that typically comes with these tropes.

They yearn to find a way to heal without requiring the bit and the bridle and the yoke of the Gods. Surely, somewhere in the Arcane, there is a way to knit flesh and bone, to draw the soul back to the body, to restore that which once was, without resorting to this foul mockery of life?

They are also, like most medical professionals I've ever known, grimly practical. Foul mockery of life though they may be, bodies that can't be resurrected/healed aren't really being used by anyone anymore, so why waste them? Maybe there's some rebranding that can be done as well. Get rid of the stigma and all that.

Some great legs on this idea, especially if stepping outside of D&D5e/etc. PF2e would be a GREAT system to explore different directions for this character.

in reply to @balketh's post:

i had a character very similar to this, a sorc i played in a friend's unreleased dnd fork game for a year or so

the concept of that character was an exploration of enlightened self interest, which i found rarely resulted in evil actions, even though they would refuse to rule them out just in case

one of my favorite moments was entering a new town and i asked the dm "roughly how flammable is this town?" and i wish i could convey to you the look of panic on the dm's face as they quickly explained it was entirely stone

in a game i gmed later i resurrected a more chill version of the character as an npc in a homebrew pathfinder game and they, their partner, and the party worked together to fight off an invasion
