an author I'm no longer a fan of for broader political reasons said something once that I still strongly agree with. it's very important for fiction about war to build up characters, get the audience to like them, and then kill them. that's fucking war. it's awful, and you have to have to remind the audience of that.
dre taking a move that basically guaranteed figure would die at a random unexpected moment wasn't a mistake, or bad storytelling, or anything like that. it's being truthful to the situation Figure was in and to the broader fictional stakes.
