I think the unofficial reason given is "handling DMs is sensitive stuff and we'd rather not do it" but i might be misremembering
The devs said it promotes some bad habits that come from being anonymous or something which I can get behind but yeah I've had to resort to using asks in a weird way
the website isnt a chat app, basically. inboxing someone is good enough for basic use and if u want to chat w them u shld use signal or discord or smth
i think they just don't want to do the work of moderating it. like it's a lot of extra work and weird in the sense that they'd have access to private communication in a way that's not quite normalized now.
private contact info is kind of a cop-out IMO, but like, if they don't want to do it they aren't going to do it 😭
