then when i say a joke that doesn't land and someone asks "is that a reference to something?"
two possible outcomes:
- it was indeed a reference to something and i have to sheepishly explain some byzantine internet meme or some ancient echolalia that's grown in my brain for years
- it WASNT a reference to anything -- my bad nonsense joke was simply so inscrutable that the other person reasonably assumed that THEY were missing something
