The Apple Pippin exclusive JRPG Salvage Story, now regarded as a cult classic, was initially critically panned for its gimmicky nature. The game was sold bundled with not only an expansion card for the Pippin that enabled the game’s 3D environments, but also a comic book accompaniment, which served as the game’s cutscenes. Whenever an important cutscene was needed, Salvage Story would refer the player to a page number, and play an accompanying soundtrack. Since then, modders have spliced the panels of the now hard to find book into the game directly for emulation, although some devout fans swear by the original experience. Like Super Mario 64, fans also theorize that there are differing versions of the comic book, or that every copy of the comic book was “personalized”, but photos of the books on forums are difficult to verify, and the development team is long since dissolved and wouldn’t respond to a request for comment. Rumors even circulated that one copy of the book was heavily erotic and had little to do with the plot, but this copy has never surfaced.
