there's a mechanic in one specific critical engagement (that's bozjanese for "big boss FATE in the bozjan zones") where the boss puts down two mines that flash briefly on the ground before becoming invisible
and contrary to how those markers are used in (edit: almost) EVERY OTHER PART OF THE GAME, the mechanic here is:
- a tank (or someone with a lost action that makes you able to eat a massive amount of damage) needs to pop a defensive and step on the mine ASAP. it'll blow up and hit them (and anyone around) for a massive, squishy-killing amount of damage.
but this is better than the alternative, which is:
- if a tank/some other sorry bastard doesn't step on the mines in time, they will explode and hit EVERYONE in the fight for that same amount of massive, squishy-killing amount of damage
as you can imagine, this has led to quite a few encounters where everyone was alive and mostly fine, and then the mines go off and in an instant everyone is dead except like two or three tanks who happened to be at full health with a defensive up, and no one knows why because that mechanic is horrible and unintuitive even AFTER the fact
anyway I have taken it as my Sacred Duty to always go into That Specific Encounter as a tank and also explain what's going on while we're waiting for the boss to become punchable. with an invuln, especially the paladin invuln, I can even take both mines!
...but with that, even with knowing what's going on and being Prepared, this mechanic is horrible because
- I have to remember WHERE the mines spawned, and this is noticeably harder when surrounded by Simultaneous Mechanics (That Require You To Count) and swarms of panicking squishies
- STOP SWARMING AROUND THE MINESITE Y'ALL. IT EXPLODES IN AN AREA AND I DON'T WANT TO GET YOU KILLED AND MAKE YOU LOSE YOUR SPECIAL BOZJA POINTS(tm)
