the silliest but most effective hack I've found for getting my brain to go do a thing it really doesn't want to do is to DC travel to Dynamis, queue trial or raid roulette, and go do the thing while I wait on queue. for some reason the process of waiting for the queue both distracts my brain from the I DUN WANNA of doing the task and also gamifies it by making it into "what will happen first? I finish this thing, or the Dynamis queue pops?"

granted, this hinges on the queue being meaningfully slow (hence going to Dynamis, where even tanks/healers don't get in instantly), and my brain not realizing it can game the system by doing some other fun, not-dreaded thing while waiting for queue like, oh, one of the myriad distractions of the Internet

(funnily enough, this first came around during Endwalker Release Queue days - while waiting for the 20k or so people in front of me to get through, I would do the dishes or file my taxes or whatever, and I'd be done with it by the time I finally got in, which made it all the sweeter. sometimes I think they should make an Endwalker Release Queue Simulator mod just for me)

I love this. Absolutely stand-out example imo of "you'd think all that fancy higher-order brainpower would mean I don't need to deliberately trick myself and couldn't even if I tried, but au contraire on both counts!"

The silliest hack I've used on myself was the Tattered World Lab when someone had dumped 8 pages of good (for a newbie) stuff in there. 1 minute timer between picking things up = 1 minute to do something productive while waiting! But lots of goodies to pick up so gotta keep doing it over and over! Pomodoro Technique set to hyper mode, which is funny because the regular version doesn't work on me, but boy howdy THIS sure did. (The secret is the dose of neurochemical goodness every minute: whatever's wrong with me involves Running Out waaaaay too fast, and the steady drip fixes me.)
