going pale as I look at the hundreds of dollars some of these houseplants cost. I cannot Fathom spending that much on a plant that could just suddenly be murdered by thrips one day (they say as they lavish grow lights, big pots, nice soil, and insecticidal soap upon their basil)

"This is my philodendron/monstera/alocasia, it's a rare breed that cost me a hundred bucks from the specialty plant store"

me, meanwhile: "this is my basil :) I bought it for seven bucks from the grocery store and I love it very very much. we are going to be friends forever"

its like the plant equivalent of buying a $4000 kitty purebred thats guaranteed to get 4 breed-associated diseases and die in 10 years vs. getting a piece of shit barncat from god knows where and that thing turns out somehow immortal.

idk if we've mentioned this before but trader joes is GREAT for house plants (esp the kind you'd see in animal crossing lol) and for really good prices! You can probably get cheap plants at, like, home depot, but the quality tends to be Bad. If there's a nursery/plant store in your area, they should have a good balance between quality (and not diseased/bugg'd) plants and price.

I think the most we've spent is $25? For either the snake plant or the monstera, and they're doing pretty well. Succulents are cheap (theoretically) but they're usually very small so you need a lot of 'em to make a pot look not-sad. But it is cool to see the, like, 4' diameter succulents that are $150+

Unrelated: our roommate's brother bought a pitcher plant, because ???? idk where he even found it that's not the kind of plant you'd find at a regular store. He treated it like a regular plant and, of course, it died. Carnivorous plants are really cool but, boy, do they look like a lot of work to keep alive! And since they eat things they feel more "alive" to me than regular plants so I would feel extra bad if it died.
