Heard that Pillowfort was in dire financial straits, so I logged on to throw some money their way. I'm not active anymore there, but I do have a fondness for the site still, and I do want them to succeed. I strongly feel that the bigger a variety of non-corporate, non-VC spaces that exist on the Internet, the better the Internet is for everyone.
While I was there, I got to thinking about the reasons I fell off of Pillowfort and onto Cohost instead, and I think there are three main ones.
Followers/mutuals count and likes counts being always visible. I have a way to hide the followers/mutuals count on desktop but not mobile, and I've yet to find a way to hide likes even on desktop.Someone was kind enough to direct me to Tassel, a userscript that can do all this and more.I'll just need to figure out how to get Firefox mobile to allow Tampermonkey.WAIT WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT'S PART OF THE Allowed Extensions NOW FUCKING FINALLY- Difficulty with posting on mobile. This HAS gotten a lot better with their new UI, I want to give credit there - that being said, on mobile, Markdown is WAY easier for me and produces better results than a WYSIWYG editor. It's very frustrating trying to select text on my finnicky touchscreen and then also tap a tiny button to format it. Subject me to BBcode if you must, just not that!
- Posting format. I'm not super hot on other people being able to add reblog additions to my posts*, but I do thrive on the whole chain o' my own posts strung one after the other thing. It really works with my brain to the point that I struggle to post without it. Being only able to make Singular Posts that stand alone makes me feel like I have to get the post Right on the first pass, as opposed to the post daisychain where I can just blaugh out everything in my brain, as it comes, to my heart's content.
If they can add a plaintext formatting mode (the third thing is ABSOLUTELY a me thing and not something I actually want the site to change), I wouldn't mind giving the site a shot again. It was a nice place, just not one that worked well for my needs. Cohost would likely still be my poasting platform of choice, but it'd be cool to crosspost the Lucent Lore somewhere where more people can be subjected to it.
*That being said, if I really don't want you to reblog a post of mine, I'll just turn reblogs off for it. It's been a policy of mine to avoid making that flavor of post on Cohost where I can, and I've benefited from it quite a bit.
