I think about this ALL THE TIME as I skid sideways into an uncontrolled roll into my middle age years. Like, we're all the protagonists of our own stories, but compared to the stories we tell about our blorbos, whether in an MMO or D&D or actual writing or what have you, they're .... not very exciting all told.
On the other hand, the fictional world of the WoL is very small. It's a world that was created for them to stand out in, become the best at everything, to move and shake it. The world we live in is so large that we only ever experience a tiny, tiny slice of it, but we're still so important to that slice that we can move and shake the people we meet - and the friends we make can move our world in turn, and if we look, we can see how that ripples outwards to affect the larger world around us. It's not the same, but when I feel small and unimportant it helps me to regain some sense of worth in this world.
The gods of FFXIV are small enough that we can defeat them. The gods of the real world are so much larger - but we can still change their path once in a while.
