working through a chain of thoughts this morning that consists of "I am Supremely Annoyed at this person*" -> "this particular incidence of Supreme Annoyance is justified" -> "despite said Annoyance being justified, I cannot think of a way in which letting my annoyance be known to them would result in any net beneficial outcome" and it has branched off into:

  • "how might I attempt to quantify the situations in which making my annoyance known to the source of annoyance would be beneficial?" -> "how would I even define 'beneficial' in this situation?"
  • "what are actions that I might take re: being annoyed other than making my annoyance known to the source of annoyance?" -> "what are the costs and results of each action?"
  • "what things do I desire in regards to being annoyed (e.g. maybe I want the annoying person to stop? what specific thing do I want them to stop? what specific thing am I finding annoying, and why?)"

and somewhere in the process of pondering these questions, I've realized that I've forgotten my annoyance. I managed to lose myself so deep in the analysis sauce that somewhere this changed from a General Feeling Of Irritation into an interesting academic exercise.

(also to make it clear, I'm not looking for reassurance or anything of the sort. I am not distressed, either about the original annoyance or getting lost in the sauce - I am expressing my amusement! you are, however, perfectly welcome to come roll around in the sauce with me.)

*a stranger on the internet who is clearly having Some Kind of Time - that's not just one but two strikes against Voicing Annoyance
