Rafael's gist is that while he is clever and charismatic and constantly playing 5D chess in his brain, he is also a genuinely sweet homebody of a person who would like nothing more than to get along with everyone and chill quietly with his beloved friends. maybe he would like An Adventure or two, but he would overall prefer to stay out of the way of the Affairs of the greater world.
truly unfortunate that he has the literal Curse Of Main Character that supernaturally compels him to wander around and get Entangled in things. he is rather dismayed about this whole situation. he does not perceive himself as pulling puppetstrings so much as desperately tugging on - and being tugged by - several dozen child leashes at once.
