"Oh, they were meaningful to me! My love is not any lesser for its differences, after all. But again and again, it was not enough that I loved. I had to love a certain way.
"I do not consider it a deficit that I cannot. If only others felt the same." He shrugs. "But that is in the past. I do not want for company now. My dear Rafael and Nathaniel foremost among them. And before them, of course, was... was..."
His hands are shaking. He's far away again - somewhere far more unpleasant than before. But just as you're about to call to him, he snaps back to the present. "But yes! I am familiar with love, to answer your question. Would you like some more tea?"
