Been chatting with folks about the logistics of moving sites in the wake of *gestures* and a common feeling I see is "moving to a new social media is really exhausting, I just don't have the energy for it anymore." This, however, has not been my experience with this experience and I've been trying to divine some reasons why:

  • I'm extroverted and I love interacting with new people whenever health and energy allow for it.
  • I don't really value having followers or mutuals. I never understood the whole concept of mutuals being a meaningful relationship either, to be honest. So it's not a big deal that I'm leaving all that behind - if I really want to stay in contact with someone I'll find a way to talk with them over Discord or whatever.
  • Likewise, I'm not reliant on socmed for my livelihood. Thank fuck.
  • I don't use socmed to browse so much as I use it as an outlet for poasting into the void, so having to build a feed anew isn't really an issue for me.
  • Likewise, I don't follow many people to begin with, so I don't mind if my feed is quiet.
  • I really fuckin love trying out new things. esp new apps and sites. And I'm pretty good at quickly figuring out what's available, what's not available, and what one can do with that.
  • I also really love the whole feeling of like... being part of a new community and having a role in tending its growth?
  • Though also I don't go to any new socmed with the idea that I'm "moving" there, esp since I'm aware any of them could die in a few years. (Remember Imzy? I Do Because I Was There) I'm just trying them out for funsies and that turns into being active sometimes I guess

tbh "I LOVE NEW THING" strikes me as a REALLY SIGNIFICANT factor here -- there's something intrinsically rewarding in it for you. Anecdotal, but like, I have a lot of the other stuff -- I desire and seek big number, I need to build an audience and a dash in order to retain interest, I'm introverted, etc -- but while this does mean that having to leave an established place sucks and I'm reluctant to do it, and moving is still a lot, the idea of trying out a new site doesn't fill me with a wave of exhaustion -- I'm often intrigued and enjoy trying to puzzle out how this new one works. Getting the inner boost of Process That You Actively Find Rewarding makes SUCH a big difference I think....
