the thing that finally tipped me over the edge wrt getting into mechanical keyboard was going, for the nteenth time, "wow I wish I could switch capslock* out for some other, actually useful key." I'm aware that there are ways to do that even with a shitty membrane keyboard (like the one I am currently using) but they all feel like hacks next to reassigning the key at a firmware level

*when I need to type in ALLCAPS I just hold down shift like god intended

just make sure you get one with a reassignable firmware that's open so Logitech or whatever deciding not to support it in a few years or whatever doesn't leave you in a lurch now that the bigger brands are starting to offer the option

It's definitely not just for this! I've been dithering about getting into the hobby for about... four years now? Always going "aw man these look and feel neat, but I could just keep getting by with shitty membrane keyboards... and what if I fuck up... I need to do more research..." (four years is enough research, I think)
