I have not only succeeded in migrating a formerly managed-host instance of Akkoma onto self-hosting without breaking federation with the teeny-tiny handful of instances I bother following, I have managed to set up Mangane (alternative frontend) at a subdomain

I still need. to go through. and tune the fucking everything though. fuck

(for the curious: https://nightfeather.cafe/bazelgeuse_apologist and https://mangane.nightfeather.cafe/@bazelgeuse_apologist - it is on allowlist federation because I can't be arsed to play nazi whack-a-mole, though)

all that said, it has honestly been really nice being able to tinker with and fix problems ourselves, without having to ask someone else to fix them on our behalf… it’s nice in theory to have someone else handling our instance, but it turns out we find it stressful in practice to not see what’s going on

also, peeking at the config files that the managed host set up, we discovered that they didn’t do hardening and missed some recommended configs for Akkoma (like having media uploads be on a very different path), so it’s not like they were Special Akkoma Experts - and that actually helps quite a bit to know
