I guess my overall feeling is that like. as long as you're not claiming to be the reincarnation of a major cultural figure or something from a culture that isn't yours (for example if someone was claiming to be factkin of Confucius or Huangdi or whatever, that would Not be cool) then idk what you are on the inside. but I do want folks to be thoughtful about where the bounds of their internal identities and experiences exist in relation to outerworld ones.

at the very least I feel that a good rule of thumb might be to consider yourself from an alternate universe from the outerworld, one where said alternate universe's analogue for any given thing is not necessarily going to be reflective of this universe's

This is not quite the same deal, but have you read The Wicked + The Divine? The basic premise is that every 75 years or so, 12 young people in the world will awaken as different reincarnated gods, and then dominate the era's arts scene for 2-3 years before flaming out. One of the pantheon in this go around is Amaterasu, who is a 20yo redheaded white girl in the UK, and much ink is spilled in-setting about this whole deal. The comic plays with this dissonance quite deliberately, including a scene wherein (rot13 for spoilers) fur trgf vagb n svtug jvgu nabgure Wncnarfr punenpgre, gryrcbegvat gurz obgu gb Antnfnxv naq chggvat ba n shyy qvfcynl bs ure fha cbjref natevyl qrpynevat urefrys nf Nzngrenfh. One can argue it's a bit hamfisted, but it's a pretty cogent illustration about how even though she is Amaterasu, she is also still white and British. And boy howdy does she need to be mindful about that when being in the world alongside Japanese folks.
